A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, informational, and practical support to a new mother and her family.
She can help the mother get comfortable, help care for the baby when the mom is unable (i.e. during showering or napping). A postpartum doula can help provide encouragement and positive reinforcement. She is available to help mom locate information that pertains to her and her baby, and can help teach mom how to care for her baby. The postpartum doula can also tidy up the house, do baby laundry, help care for older siblings, cook light meals.
The postpartum doulas main job is to mother the mother and help ease her transition into motherhood while her body is working on healing.
